I heard a strange animal....

I live in Los Angeles, but in the mountains. A few weeks ago I was on my roof at night, and from within the trees I heard a very strange sound. The sound can be best described as "whapping", because thats what it was. Whap whap whap whap whap whap for awhile. It was like the animal was shaking its body from side to side and each time it made the sound. Does anyone have any idea what this creature is? It was moving from tree to tree.

could you judge the animal's shape which big or small according to the sound? maybe it is the windy sound.

Probably an owl, but here, buzzards will do the same on brighter nights if something disturbs them. Kt

If it were spring, I'd suggest a grouse. During mating and nesting season, the male grouse, during a display, opens and then snaps his wings against his body. The time spacings between beats shortens with each "flap" and lessens in intensity. The first beat is felt more than it is heard. If you had been sleeping, you first sensation is a pressure wave on your chest. Its a wierd feeling. But, at this time of year, maybe it is an owl.
