Here are some pictures of hawk (i believe) in my backyard and do you think my small (l0 lb) dogs are in any danger?? Sorry about the pics, I have a good camera but not yet proficient at it's use. Did the best I could. http://www.flickr.com/photos/evilgriff/sets/72157607155951580/detail/

A 10 pound dog is about 5 times bigger then the hawks. A hawk would have to be starving to even think about attacking a dog that size. Especially if you have more then 1 and they are out together.

Generally, raptors can only take down something that is 1/2 their weight or less, and can only carry off something that is less than half their weight. The largest hawks and owls we have in North Carolina would weigh a max of about 4-4.5 Ibs. That would mean your ten pound dog is in no danger whatsoever. Raptors have been known to go after small cats and dogs, but this typically involves them feeling threatened, or said pets being near a nest or fledglings. Its best to always keep an eye on small dogs, and just not have outdoor cats.

I have a 4 lb. Pom and while I'm not in the least bit worried that a hawk could really take her my concern would be the harm the talons would cause if the hawk mistakenly thought she was a rabbit. She is cream color and although I know a hawk would not be interested in eating a dog, the hawk might not realize she is a dog. Therefore my dog is never, ever outside w/o me. Around here we have coyotes (they can scale a 12 foot fence) that are more of a danger to our dogs.

I have a coopers hawk that hangs around my yard in the summer. I also have a great gray owl that is hanging around now. I have 4 dogs, the smallest of which is a 5.5 lb chihuahua. I am really afraid the little one will be taken by one of these birds. They are never out alone, but still...

I own a small yorkie poo and and when I met a guy this summer when we were camping, he told me his sister used to own one that looked like her. She was mowing her lawn and her dog was at the other side of her lawn. She said a hawk (I'm wondering if it may have been a golden eagle?) came down, grabbed him in his talons and carried her dog away. She never saw her dear pooch again. My small dogs never go outside alone. I stand right beside them and always have a shovel or rake nearby. I worry more about nasty dogs coming around since they aren't afraid of humans, but whatever tries to take my dogs will have an indent from my shovel if they ever try.
