Can anyone tell me what this bird was that was in my backyard in W. PA ? My novice guess is an immature Cooper's or maybe even a N. Goshawk.

Goshawks are awesome spectacular hawks. Cooper's hawks are awesome.

This is an awesome, female, immature Cooper's hawk.

Female Goshawks are the size of Redtails in length, and just as heavy.

Here is a link that might be useful: Gos

I had first leaned towards the Cooper's and then the more I looked at the illustrations in the Sibley and the Peterson guides the more I became confused.
Thank you for the ID and the linky.

Well, that's my thought, anyway. Coops are big, but Gos way bigger. The feet in your image are big, but not gos big.

I would like to hear what Birdnut says.

I am also thinking this is a Cooper's Hawk. However, the clincher between immature Cooper's and Northern Goshawk is that the goshawk has brown streaked undertail covers and on a Cooper's the undertail coverts are pure snow white. Although the undertail coverts are not visible, the righthand picture shows the streaking on the breast/belly fading out as it gets closer to the tail, indicating the coverts are probably unstreaked and this is a Cooper's. Also, an immature (1st year) goshawk would appear darker and the streaks on the breast darker and more numerous.

Based on all that gibber gabber, I am going with first-year Cooper's Hawk.

1st year NOGO showing undertail coverts.

See another link below. Images are not mine but from pbase on the internet.

birding_nut thanks for your reply. That sure is a clear and crisp photo.

elly_nj - If you copy and paste the "1st year NOGO" link it should work, at least it did for me.

WOW! That is an amazing bird. Love the spotting.

I've never seen one in the feathers, so to speak.
