Hawks/Eagles and Pets - How do I get the Hawks/Eagles to move?

| I live in a moderate sized village right on the main street, which is also a state road. There is a heavy amount of traffic most days and even a good deal of people outdoors walking and so on. We live nearly a half mile from the nearest wooded area. So it seems odd that we recently had 4 hawks/eagles move in to our neighborhood. I too am concerned for the wildlife, but I'm sure they will move or lay low. However, I have three very very small dogs. One is 12 lbs, and the other two are less than 5 lbs each. We have never had a threat like this in the area before, it's not like I live in the country. One feasted on a bird in our driveway. Is there anything I can do, aside from house arrest, to keep my pets safe? I know some birds hate things that flash and reflect light. Is there any trick like that? |

I've seen on other threads that some people have suggested to stop feeding the other birds and other little critters in the area and the hawks will move as the others move off due to lack of food. We don't feed the local wildlife, of which there is usually very little. Is there something that will just annoy the hawks into wanting to relocate? We're not, by bird standards, terribly far from the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge, 20 miles or so. And the Adirondacks are only 150 miles away. Could we gently nudge them in that direction? Another thing, one of my co-workers thought the bird still might be migrating north, that this is just a stop over on its way home. Is this likely in Upstate New York this time of year (it's still very cold, we had snow last night), or is the bird here to stay? Most of my neighbors in the eight square blocks on this side of town also have small dogs, so we are all concerned. We are in hope that the big birds in question haven't found a new home here with our pets on the menu. |

| I too am concerned for the wildlife, but I'm sure they will move or lay low. Hawks and eagles ARE wildlife. They are less of a threat to your pets than your local coyotes. Keep the dogs inside, or on a leash outside, until the raptors move on. Annoying raptors is illegal. |
