Hi, I see this is not a real hoppin forum but I do have a question. I lost a baby Robin sometime early this morning. I expected them to fledge sometime this weekend. I saw they were gone this morning and was happy until I found some baby feathers on the ground. My question....and I already feel awful so the answer cant make it worse.....Do Hawks kill their prey quickly or do they just eat them alive? I know they gotta eat but I cant stand the though of anything suffering like that. Im really hoping someone tells me they kill quickly but I'm pretty sure thats not the case.

Actually it is pretty quick a lot of the time, but not always. The talons are basically designed for a quick kill though.

I would also add, during fledgling time, most hawks don't eat at the scene of the crime. They are usually mobbed by the parents and every other bird in the area, so they fly off to enjoy their catch. There are alot of nocturnal predators (owls, racoons, foxes, possums, etc) that get fledgings and eat at the scene. Storms also blow alot early fledges out of the nest which make them easy targets.

House cats are the biggest killers of nesting song birds...

They grab with the feet and bite the spine at the neck for the kill.
