| We've been blessed with a returning pair of red tails nesting in a tree in our backyard the past three years in Northern New Jersey(we love their beauty and still have plenty of other birds and critters running around). This year we saw two fledglings in the nest - but as of this week there is only one. The remaining bird still can not fly but will probably soon - it is being fed less and less and is hopping from branch to branch.
We're trying to figure out what happened to the other one. Did it learn to fly sooner and fly away? Could it have been injured 2 weeks ago (had alot of storms) and died? (we have found no real evidence of a dead hawk under the tree) If it has died in the nest would the surviving hawks eat it?
We have noticed a pair return for regular feedings - the mother we've identified due to a nick in it's wing (larger hawk) - could the other hawk be the missing fledgling or is it the the male (father)? Any thoughts or theories would be appreciated. Thanks. |
