Raptor ID Help Needed

Posted by NMatt30 (My Page) on

This bird has been perching in my neighbors tree "crying" off and on for the last week. I can't seem to find any images online similar enough for me to feel like I can ID it. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for the help,
Nate

I'm in Northwest Florida

Very handsome bird.

Probably a red-shouldered hawk - the Florida ones tend to have a gray head and less barring on their belly.

Yes it is. A couple of other people have suggested it's a juvenile Mississippi kite. The images I've found are once again similar but I can't seem to find one that's a spot on match.

Look at this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mesquakie8/2876405014/

It has the pale head, and the vertical stripes on the breast like your mystery bird.

Looks like an immature Mississippi Kite to me. The bright white supercillary line with rich brown streaking are clinchers. Plus, this bird has the "cute rounded head and small beak" of a kite rather than the blockier head and more pronounced beak of a buteo hawk.
