35 snakes on February 10th in Mid-Missouri!

It was a warm winter day so I went and checked some of my local spots to see what snakes were stirring.

The garter snakes were especially out in force and I saw several mating balls of multiple garter snakes. I even saw one lonely garter snake on top of a northern water snake (perhaps it hadn't had its morning coffee yet).

My total for the day was:

29 Intergrade Eastern/Red-Sided Garter Snakes
3 Eastern Yellowbelly Racers
2 Orange-Striped (Western) Ribbon Snakes
1 Northern Water Snake

Not bad for early February :-)

Wow, I had no idea they would be out so earlier in colder areas. And I've never seen a single one of those species, being mostly a Florida snake watcher. Most of the garter snakes I see down here are bluish, with some being downright turquoise green.

If I ever get to your part of the world, I'm going to email you and beg for a guided tour! You see more good stuff.

My only excitment lately were two birding trips to Emeralda Marsh (freshwater area) and BlackPoint Trail on Merritt Island (impounded salt water marsh). Fabulous wintering ducks, avocets, all the usual wading suspects, eagles, and even purple gallinules. But the only reptiles out were a few gators trying to warm back up after our freezes down here.

Congratulations on a great snaking day!

Marcia
