| This snake is about 12" to 14" long and was found wrapped around a door knob. We live about 100 yards from a brackish river in coastal Virginia.
Thanks in advance.

My first snake ever in childhood. Juv. Black Rat. Excellent pet if you're into that.

Thanks for the quick reply. I know nothing about snakes. He was kinda cute for a snake and has been released in the back yard to catch mice, moles (I hope), grubs, etc. I hope I get to see him again.

I live in coastal, VA, too, and as just lamenting on another GardenWeb forum that we never see any snakes! My Jack Russell Terrorist might have something to do with that! Enjoyed seeing your photos! We're in Mathews County, not far from the Chesapeake Bay. What county are you in? Julie http://GardenNerds.blogspot.com

That looks a lot like the picture of the snake I just posted....Guess I should have looked around...but I was so upset at finding this thing in my house this morning... Still not sure what it was but I know it was vibrating the end of it tail and you could hear a rattle sound...so I was scared it was a rattle snake...in Iowa. patti

Black rat snakes do that sometimes- probably to imitate a rattler to scare away predators.
