Snake ID

One of the posters on the Florida forum asked for a snake ID, and I told her I would check with you guys. Y'all are much better than I am. Mud snake was guessed, and while I agreed that it looked like one, when another poster put up photos side by side, there were differences. The trouble is, it's a belly shot, and I'm awful at the UNDERSIDE of snakes. If anyone could ID this, it would be great, and I'd learn something new, too.

The snake was not seen in Florida, but farther north. (Virginia, I think). Link below.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Looks just like the photo in the Peterson Guide of a Broad banded Water Snake, but if in FL is probably a Banded Water Snake. Wish ignorant people wouldn't kill snakes.

RE: Snake ID

The snake is definately an Eastern Kingsnake ,Lampropeltis getulus getulus. Benificial as well as NOT venomous . Although they will defend themselves when threatened as would any other animal or human being for that matter !
