Beautiful Watersnake

| Yesterday afternoon, I was taking a walk along a local trail, and noticed a large thick snake basking in the sun on a rock near the creek. My first reaction was that it was a copperhead; however, the snake moved into the water and swam over to where I was standing. Its head was not wider than the neck, and the pupils appeared round rather than vertical--the pattern on the back was not the typical copperhead pattern. It was actually a Northern Water snake with reddish, orange and brown coloration. This made my day--really cool experience! I video tapped the snake swimming in the water and and will post on my site next week. |
