What kind of snake is this ?

Hi all....didn't know this forum was here...

I posted this on the Kitchen Table..and they told me you might be able to help....

Found this in my house this morning. I Iowa.

Same one as the Name This Snake post. Nice one. Great pet or resident mouse catcher. It's vibrating tail trick worked.

Look what someone else found for me...I think this is the right one...

the one in the third pic. looks exactly like the one that was in my house. Spots and pattern on top of head are just the same.

No it's definitely not a Massasauga. It's most likely a juvenile Black Rat Snake, if not that, than a Western Fox Snake. Both these species will vibrate their tails to mimic a rattlesnake whenever they feel threatened, so don't worry, it's totally harmless.

It's a juvenile Black Rat Snake. Your pictures are pretty good actually; certainly good enough for a definitive identification.
