found this guy along a river in Connecticut could it be a water snake or moccasin... black & brown stripe on red...

Northern Watersnake - unusually shiny one, probably recently shed. Also unusually reddish. Pity someone killed it, they are not poisonous - just vile tempered and very defensive.

It's a Northern Water Snake. Its a nice colorful one. They are harmless. There are no Water Moccasins in Connecticut or anywhere near Connecticut. That should give peace of mind to those who fear snakes in or near water in your area. Water Moccasins (Cottonmouths) are a Southern species that only get as far north as Southeastern Virginia on the east coast. Below is a link for more info on northern water snakes in Connecticut.
