Snake id

We saw this snake on a bird walk in Chester county southeast Pennsylvania on thursday He seemed alot bigger than a garter snake but I could not get a closer picture since he left

Looks like a northern water snake in the face to me too, and it does appear that his scales are keeled, so it's a likely shot. It would be a lot easier to be sure if he was wet, as his patterning would be much more visible. I am sure it's not one to be worried about.
