Attacked!

I love snakes. I was walking my friend's very gentle black lab in the wildlife refuge, and he snooted a huge Northern water snake. I did not see the snake coiled as we approached it. It struck at poor Fynn (did not make contact), then coiled and hissed! It was at least 30" long and as fat as my thumb-to-middle-finger. So cool!

Of course I went to get a closer look, but it slid away.

Fynn (a very smart dog, respectful of what he does not know) was very sad and frightened by the ordeal. I don't think he ever met a snake before, and until now has been terrorized by my two kittens.

Elly,

Great story! How good a look did you get at the snake and how certain are you that it was a Northern Water Snake? Any chance the snake was an Eastern Hognose Snake? The hissing part has me intrigued.

RE: Attacked!

I've seen a number of NW snakes, so I think I can readily identify it. Also, it was huge. Are Hognose snakes huge?

If I were south I would have thought it was a Cottonmouth at first glance; that's how big it was.

It only opened and hissed once.
