I need help identifying

| Hi there. We came across this snake yesterday here in Eastern Idaho. One guess was its a rattlesnake, just too small to have its rattles, because of the triangular head and small neck. Its a little difficult to see the shape of the head from this picture, but perhaps there are other details to look at. If anyone can help identify it that would be great. Thanks!

| No worries. It is not a rattlesnake. It's a Great Basin Gopher Snake. They flatten their heads when alarmed and are also one of the few snakes that will sometimes even hiss and inflate when alarmed. But they are harmless and nonvenomous. The last time I was in Idaho I moved seven of them off a 20 mile stretch of U.S. Highway. Nice picture by the way! |
