Now that I have my rattler verses pet problem figured out. I have another question about rattlesnakes. I have heard they do not exist in western washington or the northwast part of oregon. They dont live on vancouver island or the lower fraser valley, and as far as I know dont live in the kootenays or columbia areas of B.C. They only seen to occur in the dry sagebrush areas in B.C. And I assume they would be more often seen east of the cascades further south. So that is my question. What is the deciding factor as to where a rattlesnake will live? Of course food chain would be important. But what about temperature climate type of vegetation ect?

RE: rattlesnake range

The main factor limiting their range is the availability of suitable denning habitat. Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes generally need rock crevice hibernacula that have deep enough crevices to withstand winter temperatures (usually in dry rocky bluffs or canyons above rivers). The rock crevices also should have good south or west facing exposures nearby so that they can get sun at optimal times when basking near the den.
