toads in window wells?

Hello. Every year, I have toads in my window wells looking into the basement. They seem to jump into them and stay there. Then they shrivel up and die. I usually put boards there for them to climb out of, but some just stay and die. It's only a foot drop. What do they think their doing?

Mostly hopping around after dark and falling into your trap. Unable to get out horizontally, they dry up in the afternoon sun. Just a guess.

Toads hop and frogs leap. Like Day said, it's a trap... basically, a pitfall trap for the toads. They are just not equipped (with their short stubby legs and thick leg muscles) to make the big leap required to get out. I know it will be extra work, but you could place some plastic over the holes temporarily.
