Attracting turtles.

I live in eastern Canada on a lake and have sheltered "bay" area in front of the house. I know there must be turtles in the lake and want them to come sun on my rocks/logs.

It is shallow and very rocky/muddy, there are tons of frogs and fish jumping daily. How can I coax some turtles to come set up shop?

All I can say is give it time...the only alterations I can think of for your bay would be to throw a few large logs or branches into the water to provide basking areas (put these logs away from the shore - turtles are more likely to bask on logs/branches that are totally surrounded by water as opposed to those which are laying half on the shore - less risk of being attacked from land).

The only thing besides that I can say, and I'm tempted not to say this but I will, would be to take some aquatic vegetation from somewhere else in YOUR lake (lilies, vallisneria, elodea..whatever)and plant them in your bay.

Thats about it...give it time..

Mikeygraz is correct in the fact that they like to have a fast escape route. You can put a turtle platform off shore. Make it wedge shaped so one edge is always accessable. Also stay out of sight and do not move. Turles are deaf but have extemely sharp eyesite. They will scoot at the slightest motion. If you see dry turtles it means no one has passed by for a while.

RE: Attracting turtles.

When its warm enough for turtles to feed, turtles are good at following their nose. A few scraps of cooked chicken are all it takes to persuade a turtle into a turtle trap.

Fish will find such a treat quick, well before the turtle do, but if you were to tempt the turtles on a daily basis at the same time they are likely to turn up waiting for feeding time. Turtles learn a feeding routine...

A dark toned basking spot easy to climb on to and to dive from would be popular with turtles, dark tones absorb the suns warmth
