I've been going back to the new spot I discovered a week ago and aint been findin much exept black rats, 5-lined skinks, and toads. See i've got this bad habit of finding a park or small nature preserve in or near my town and going there almost every day of the week until i'm satisfied i've found nearly every species of herp that lives there. My last spot (inside city limits) I searched for a year and got 7 snake species,0 lizards,5 turtle species, 5 frog/toad species, and 0 salamanders. I'm sure I
missed several species but i'll be back someday with drift fences and a/c wha ha ha ha! If anyone gots a cure for my sickness please let me know. The mountain bikin or walkin is good exercise though and fun. Anyway went to my new spot today and found 3 new species....

RE: back to my new spot

Those are good numbers for this time of the year. I would discourage "over hunting" the area though. If you check a spot too frequently, you tend to scare off prey items as well as the predator. Over hunting especially hurts your chances if you are flipping rocks too frequently. This breaks the seal around the rocks and allows them to dry out. I would hold off for a couple of weeks if not a month before fall rains and cool weather comes and you should be happy with the results. I tend to find many good spots as well as average ones and only hit them a couple of times a year. Try new things like road hunting and walking through good habitat in the evenings during the off months. Good luck.
