Red Milks from this week, belated a few days

More than 5 inches of rain in not too many days time has kept herps surface active here, and have shown me some interesting things in a couple of forays. Unfortunately, the camera is not always along for the ride—the saddest misses were very attractive speckled king and partially twin-spotted prairie king. Did get to document some unusual syspila activity though. Many rocks are currently soggy-bottomed and were vacant, except for the occasional toad, such as this fellow, in situ:

Other tins produced reptiles also:

Many beautiful but empty rocks later, I lifted one and notice a flash of color along the side—not under but alongside the rock. This large "blue" syspila would have been very attractive a few days later:

One of the few snakes actually under a rock—the largest C. constrictor that I have seen retaining this much of the juvenile coloration/pattern, at over 2’:

One more, this pretty syspila continued the strange trend, under a board:

Good outing Matt for August! Very interesting where the milks were found. That would seem to indicate they are moving and not just coming up to shed. We found our resident 19 inch milk this week again on our property. Last sighting was first of June. The same snake meaasured 19 inches last year also. Would have thought it would have grown some.

Enjoyed your Yellowstone trip report!

Thanks Gary-- yes, it was very strange to see them out and quite a ways away from the rock piles in mid-August-- and the only one in shed was the one under (alongside) the rock. They were out and moving, perhaps fleeing the soggy ground that was almost everywhere.

Don't know what it is in that Ozark dirt that seems to stunt your syspila.
