Outing this weekend

This Saturday’s outing with the boy was really a fishing trip—we were waylaid by herps for a few minutes though. I apologize for picture OD, playing with a new camera.

Aside from my son’s favorite, prairie ringnecks, this was the first find, under A/C:

Under a traditionally Coluber constrictor tailgate, we saw this coiled:

Osage copperhead, Agkistrodon contortrix phaeogaster

My son can get to these quicker than I can sometimes—ooh, snake, little snake!—and he’s off. He does a good job of being gentle with them.

We finally got to our destination and began casting while keeping a look out for Graham’s crayfish snakes—our quarry came quickly and in numbers—these next photos are off-topic in case you are waiting on download and may want to stop them

On the drive home, a small speck on the road seemed to move. I stopped quickly, making the car a hundred feet back or so go around us, and saving the life of this neat little fellow who was right in the line of tire. It appeared that he may have just broken the shell and emerged:

Very good afternoon in my book—herps and fish and watching my boy enjoy them.

Amen to that Matt! Your boy looks about the same age as mine (3 next month). I think I replied once before telling you that I've got him hooked on herps already. We found a baby snapping turtle just like yours in a creek that runs by our house, but your pictures are much better. Great post that I can really relate to.

Thanks Evan-- similar age, mine is coming up on 2.5 yrs. As I'm sure your's did, he loved the snapping turtle. We're now working on distinguishing species (copperheads) as a safety precaution even though the rule is not to touch them without dad telling him its ok. He finds ringnecks in the backyard and brings them to my wife during the day before returning to let them go.

Yes, he loved it. There was very little water left in the creek where we found it. I released it in a different branch of the same creek down the street that always has more water. We've had a really dry summer here in Nashville and my son talks about how we need rain for the turtle. He's remarkably good for a 3 yr. old at naming species. He was quick to point out in an animal book of his that they misidentified a milk snake as a corn snake. His favorite are hognose snakes because he likes their bluff routine and he knows my favorite are king snakes. Needless to say I have a blast talking herps with him.

Wow, catching a milk-corn mis-id is pretty advanced for a 3 yr old-- that kid is going places.

If he does maybe he can take me along for the ride since I probably missed out on my chance to make a career of it years ago. If not, at least maybe I'll have someone to go out in the field with when I'm retired.
