Summertime Missouri Herps (Part 1)

I finally got some pics from my Missouri trip last week uploaded. Here are some of the things we found, both herp related and not.

The first find of the trip was this Black Ratsnake crossing the road.

When taking pictures of the Black Rat we noticed tons of frogs hopping out of the way of our feet. They were Southern Leopard Frogs.

Despite extremely dry and hot conditions, we still found several salamanders and a Red Eft under logs and debris. I was suprised to see so many salamanders considering the weather, but there they were under the logs we flipped.

Marbled Salamanders (Ambystoma opacum)

Red Eft (Notophthalmus viridescens)

We also saw several of these newly transformed salamanders. They were no more than 2 inches long and I believe they are Smallmouth Salamanders.

Ambystoma texanum

We saw and heard heard many Cope's Gray Treefrogs.

Cope's Gray Treefrog (Hyla chrysocelis)

I found this small snake under a rock.

Western Worm Snake

I thought this was interesting.

Northern Fence Lizard stalking a mantis.

The rest will be in part 2.

Thanks for looking

Scott Albert

personally, I love the shot of the Black Rat crossing the road. It reminds me of the adrenaline rush I get when I see a snake up ahead on a road or trail.
