Black Snake

| Might anybody be able to identify this snake found on a rock in the middle of a small stream in southeastern PA? I could only get a picture from the bridge above it. It appeared to be about 2-3 feet long. Thanks.

| I think its actually a very dark Northern Water Snake. Its unusual for them to have so little visible pattern, but some specimens are very dark like this. |

| I was actually myself trying to decide between the two species suggested here. I only have a low power telephoto, so that picture was cropped. I suspect that if I had been able to get closer, more pattern might be visible. I was leaning toward the choice of water snake partly because it was on a rock in the middle of a small stream and would have had to pass through the water to get there. Would a rat snake do that? |
