Very Few Snakes But A Great Weekend

It is extremely dry here but we did see two garter snakes in our garden and a northern water snake and two ribbon snakes on a fishing trip. One of the ribbon snakes was found by hearing that familiar sound a frog makes when caught by a snake.

About an hour before dark one evening I spotted only my third live armadillo. It was in an open field and I was able to get about two minutes of video. Some from my vehicle and some from only about 30 feet away. It seemed to be looking for food and I was able to get very close before it noticed me. After filming I thought I would try and catch it as I saw Jeff Corwin do on TV. They must be faster here in Missouri because I never even came close to grabbing it's tail!

Our best sighting was a large bobcat about noon last Sunday. Both my son's saw it too and it was our first ever. It was crossing a gravel road with what appeared to be a rabbit in it's mouth. The legs looked very long because it was holding it's prey up high. The tail was horizontal and it was moving at what I would call a fast walk. It went down over a steep hillside so I grabbed my camcorder and again gave chase. I never saw or heard anything after getting out of my vehicle. I thought maybe the rabbit would slow it down enough to possibly get another look. It was a real thrill to say the least!

RE: Very Few Snakes But A Great Weekend

great bobcat find. I have seen 4 in my life now, each while looking for snakes. (well my 1st one in Laguna Atascosa in South Texas I was looking for snakes and or bobcats and ocelots, but the others all came as herping bonuses or instead of herps "I was skunked on herps at Snake Road on a cold October day once but saw an otter and bobcat that day>).

I have had close looks but not long looks--they always disappear quick in my experience, but are a thrill nonetheless.

I have yet to see a live armadillo in Missouri but have seen them in Georgia and texas.
