My snake road report

Me and my wife brought her parents who were visiting from Maryland to Snake Road this weekend. Since this was their first herping experience we stuck to the road and didn't explore the bluffs and we made just one trip up and down the road each day.

On Saturday one trip up and down the road produced:

2 Western Cottonmouths
2 Yellowbelly Water Snakes
2 Northern Ringneck Snakes
2 Rough Green Snakes

We missed out on the same timber rattlesnake that Indianaherp mentioned. Someone had also seen a hognose on the road. Most people were reporting that the action was slow, but people were seeing a few snakes at a slow but steady pace. The foot traffic was fairly heavy on Saturday.

On Sunday the cottonmouths really started moving:

One trip up and down the road produced:

9 Western Cottonmouths
1 Yellowbelly Water Snake
1 Southern Black Racer

Also:
2 Northern Slimy Salamanders
1 Central Newt
1 Green Tree Frog

The most interesting snake I heard about the second day was someone seeing a juvenile Western Mud Snake on the road. Human traffic was lighter on Sunday.

For just one trip up and down the road I thought the cottonmouth action was pretty good the second day.

I really need to make it down ther one day. I am limited on my trips so by fall, I am out of funds. I guess it isnt going anywhere. How is snake road in the spring?

RE: My snake road report

Snake Road is comparable in the spring and has fewer people then. The difference from my experience is that the fall is more consistent and the spring can be more extreme in successes and failures. If its bad weather in the fall you still see snakes because they have to get to their dens and they ain't stopping for rain or cold. In the spring if the weather is bad the snakes are mostly still near their dens and will tuck in and wait it out. On the flip side if it is 70 degrees and sunny in the early spring the bluffs are a bonanza of basking snakes.

My best day ever there was a day in March of 04 when I saw 57 snakes including 3 timbers and 30 or so cottonmouths. Ryan was also there that day and saw 74 snakes.

Not too shabby Wayne, especially considering the weather. I heard it was pretty hot. That right?

What did your inlaws think?
