Yesterday (Thurs.) I got to go on a trip down to southern IN with a group from Earlham College here in town. Our first stop was a great spot for marbleds (a lifer for me!) we found over 15 of them at two small, dry vernal pools. Here are some pics.
The second log we flipped revealed two beautiful marbleds.
Many of the other marbleds were found under leaf litter around the dry pools. Northern Duskies seemed to be out in extremely high numbers today. we found a few Northern Slimies as well, but I let the only big adult escape into a burrow under a rotten log. We netted some male eastern newts at a few of the ponds that still held water. This beautiful wood frog was found while looking through the leaf litter for marbleds. We headed to Muskatatuck NWR after we had checked 3 or 4 pools for salamanders. The sun had been out sporadically all day and we were hoping the copperbellies would be out as well...and luckily they were.
