Pond/garden snake

| He is long, very thin, tiny head and comes and goes from the garden to the pond. Scares me to death sometimes, ran across my foot and scurried away and then kind of stands up and watches me. Live in the NE. Is this a typical garden snake? |

The name "garden snake" is actually vernacular for any number of snake species commonly found in yards in the United States, usually referring to snakes of the genus Thamnophis (garter and ribbon snakes). If your snake has longitudinal stripes, then its likely you're dealing with a gartersnake or ribbonsnake (Thamnophis ssp.). The behavior you noted (stands up and watches you) seems rather typical of ribbonsnakes, in my opinion. If you could post a photo that would be excellent. Species in the genus Thamnophis are known for being incredibly variable in coloration. Hope this helps... ~Mike Northern Ribbonsnake (Thamnophis sauritus)
Eastern Gartersnake (Thamnophis sirtalis)

| It's a harmless snake. Another possibility based on the behavior you describe is the Northern Black Racer. |
