Bird crash in window

Can you please post ideas on how to prevent birds crashing in our south-facing windows? I have installed some of those black raptor shapes - but they don't prevent the problem altogether.

Crashes occur two or three times per year, but even that is too frequent for me.

We built our house with the backyard on the south side, with large windows: it is wonderful to look out at all times of year and see our big garden. But I am sad to loose the occasional chickadee or hummingbird.

All suggestions welcome. Thank you!

Hi Shapiro,
Similar problem here too with a large Fla room facing the SE. 2-3 birds/year isn't too bad considering it's a huge room as even the smaller windows on the other side of the house get hit too at times. My old cat (now deceased) got 2-3/month. No easy solution. Chalk it up to Pilot error ;o)

Often times, birds attack a window because they see their reflection in it, and think it's an intruder (rival male, etc.). They dive-bomb it, and are surprised when they crash into the window.

One thing I've had some luck with is to cut out the silhouette of a hawk and tape it to your window (you can probably buy this from some of the mail-order pest control companies). The hawk shape instinctively causes fear and a reverse in course by most birds. The down-side is that if your feeder is next to this window, you'll probably drive away a lot of your desired birds.

Perhaps you can put a window treatment on the glass, to reduce its reflectivity? That shouldn't repel the birds...just prevent them from thinking their territory is being invaded.

Hope this helps.

I read about some plastic decals of spider webs that birds know to avoid, perhaps those would work?

I had the same problem at the back of my house where we have large windows, and it always happened at the time of year that the sun was directly on the windows creating a mirror effect. we installed some awnings over the top of the windows which shade them quite a bit which has helped a lot to reduce the reflection/mirror effect and the birds dont fly into them anymore. when the sun is directly on large windows like that, I think they just see an open space to fly through but it's horrible to hear that *bang* when a bird slams into the glass.

I hate it when this happens, too. :( I'll take a look at what info's been provided. ;)
